Letters from John Campbell Dated: 1879
1st Letter
This is the 88th anniversary of my Pilgrimage. I was born February 1st, 1791 in Tivaconaway, County Derry, north of Ireland--and on Christmas Day 1813 in presence of a few friends, Esther Marks and I took each other by the hand promising to each other to make the journey of life together, which we enjoyed in harmony, affection and love. In 1818 we migrated to America with Two children, stopped in Clearfield County, Penn. and in 18(41?) We moved to Scott Co. Iowa. But alas on the 13th of April 1851 the dearest of all my _______ earthly affection was suddenly called away without suffering the pain of death by apoplexy at the age of 60, when the rush of bloom of her complexion had not quite departed. She died of the same disease as her father and grandfather. We had 9 children. and 5 of them have gone to other shore, 4 are still this side but scattered fare and wide. I have above one hundred grand and great grandchildren scattered far abroad, and pray the Lord may bless them and protect them from evil, they all may become heirs to Salvation through their blessed redeemer.
affectionate, John campbell
2nd Letter
My dear son Stewart, on last evening I rec_____ your long looked for and welcome letter. It was great satisfaction to me as I lost many silent hours for sleep as I thought of your lonely condition. Since Lydia was dead must of my trouble was lest you would get into the disgraceful habit of drinking as you have lost the wise council for your wife, your letter is more satisfactory than I had expected as you have got your ------ and lots ------for beside having a considerable ---up in favor of your last -----work, and expect you have been keeping up others who won't keep themselves. You are to blame for keeping hall last winter, you have been nursing Lewis in illness all his days and he hangs onto you yet, it will be better for both you and him to separate and let him learn something else than going around a ----- and killing horses at your expense. On next page you will find a copy of a memorial I wrote at the request of Mary McGinnis and Mary C. Moore. Johnny is still oppressed with fits, She is called one of the most intelligent women in the community and very hard worker.
